Unsung Heroes:
Dr. Mary Dwyer, Citadel Theatre Donor
At Citadel Theatre, our story is shaped not only by what happens on stage but also by the remarkable individuals who support our work behind the scenes. This month, we proudly recognize Dr. Mary Dwyer as one of our Unsung Heroes.
Mary and her husband first discovered Citadel Theatre while she was serving as CEO of a large global organization. With a demanding travel schedule, they were searching for high-quality theater close to home - and found just that at Citadel.
Over the past 15 years, Mary has become a dedicated audience member and supporter, attending nearly every production. “We’ve never been disappointed,” she shares. From powerful performances like Cabaret and Mercy to inspiring productions featuring student actors, Mary is continually impressed by the caliber and range of work presented on Citadel’s intimate stage.
For Mary, live theater offers something deeply meaningful. It is “an opportunity to be challenged by new ideas, feel emotions, and be entertained.” That sense of connection and reflection is part of what drives her commitment to the arts.
She also recognizes the broader impact theater has on the community. Supporting organizations like Citadel helps strengthen the local economy, creates opportunities for artists, and contributes to overall well-being. “We have a national crisis in mental health,” Mary notes, “and theater improves well-being.”
Mary’s generosity is rooted in a vision for the future. She believes in sustaining Citadel as a cultural hub and ensuring that high-quality, diverse productions remain accessible to everyone. Her support also extends to educational programming, helping to nurture the next generation of performers.
“Only purchasing tickets does not address investing in long-term theater,” she says. “We want to help ensure Citadel continues to thrive for years to come.”
Mary, we are truly grateful for your ongoing support, your passion for the arts and your belief in Citadel Theatre’s mission.
